Because of the climate change and global warming problem, the greenhouse gases (GHG) mitigation has been a priority for the United Nations and has establish mechanisms that, from one side could mitigate these GHG and, by the other side, could generate economic benefits to the entities that made investments in technology or process using these mechanisms.

The United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) was created as the organism responsible to attend the climate change and, for the development countires, defined as Non Annex I, has establish the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to support the GHG mitigation projects.

There are many gases that produce the greenhouse effect, but the reference to mesaure the pollution and/or mitigation is the carbon dioxide (CO2e), because it is the one that has more presence in the athmosphere as a GHG, after the oxygen.

The opportunity to obtaine the economic benefits with the CDM is by running a project that mitigate CO2e, because every year the UNFCCC deliver the Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs, a debt instruments that usually trades in the european markets. For each mitigated ton of CO2e per year, the UNFCCC delivers one CER as long as the project lasts, adding these benefits to the normal benefits of every project, increasing the return rate.
